Services

These are CHILD Deaf Youth Project’s (CDYP) current service provisions, however, we continually seek to expand and enhance these services and welcome suggestions and ideas from young people and their parents. You may use our comments board to make any suggestions to us.

Befriender Service

This service provides support to Deaf young people and their families with areas relating to self-esteem, confidence, isolation and communication as well as encouraging interaction in other CDYP activities.

Mentoring – this service provides trained Deaf adults to work with D/deaf children and young people, to promote and act as positive deaf role models. This is particularly important for D/deaf children and their families, as they may have very little interaction with Deaf adults in their everyday life. The service is completely confidential.

North East Deaf Youth Partnership

This partnership consists of Deaf Youth Organisation's across the North East region and provides children with the opportunity to meet new friends and friends they haven’t seen for a while. The partnership take turns to host special events such as Residential weeks, Deaf School Leavers Course, Halloween parties, Christmas parties, Drama workshops, Sports week, Easter activities and others.

Deaf School Leavers Course

Once a year the Partnership holds a residential course for Deaf school leavers. The aim of this course is to give all D/deaf youngsters full information regarding their options after school life and help them feel confident in stepping out into the adult world. Discussion topics include: access to further education, such as college or university, apprentice / job opportunities, where to find careers advice and how to access the various methods of support such as Note-takers, Communication Support Workers and Interpreters. We discuss subjects relevant to young people today, their concerns about Drugs, Alcohol, Sexual Health and others as well as providing fun out-door team building activities.

In 2005 CDYP hosted the course at Carlton Lodge Outward Bound Activity Centre in Thirsk. It was a great success and all those involved enjoyed the learning curve along with the fun activities outside of the classroom.
